Description

This is a picturesque farmhouse and associated barns situated along Clooney Road in the townland of Coolagh, near Ballykelly. The buildings date from approximately 1820 to 1839, with later additions and alterations. The main house is a two-storey, three-bay vernacular farmhouse, accompanied by a linear group of barns on its southern side. All structures are harled and painted white, with a more recent concrete block wall, also harled and painted, unifying the buildings along the road. The windows on the front facade are not symmetrically arranged. The entrance door is flanked by single-pane sidelights and sheltered by brick side walls capped with painted concrete. The windows are metal casements, with the first-floor windows being square in proportion. Each gable is topped by brick chimneys and concrete bargeboards, and there is a single window at first floor to the rear of each gable. A sheeted back door is flanked by two windows, with a single window above. The roof is covered in natural slate and there is no return at the rear. Five metres behind the house, a painted concrete retaining wall stands, beyond which the land rises steeply. To the southwest is a two-storey concrete block barn with a natural slate roof and stone gable, painted to match the others, and aligning with the retaining wall. Closer to the road, a single-storey stone barn has a slate roof, and a lower barn has a corrugated metal roof. An open metal-clad turf shed completes the group.

The current occupant raised the house from storey and a half to two stories in 1958. The concrete retaining walls and barn walls replaced previous stone walls. Clooney Road historically ran closer to the garden walls, but the carriageway is now four metres distant. The buildings were first shown on the Ordnance Survey map of 1830 without the barns. An extension to the southwest appears on the 1855 Ordnance Survey sheet, while the present arrangement of the barns, including the extension, is documented from 1924.
