Description
A simple and attractive Georgian-style house situated on the south-east side of the main Derry to Limavady Road near Greysteel, County Londonderry. The building dates from the second half of the 18th century and is shown on the 1830 Ordnance Survey map. It stands six steps above road level, set back behind a small garden enclosed by a harled and whitened wall approximately 800mm high, topped with wrought iron fencing formed from 10mm diameter rods in an interlocking loop pattern.
The house is a two-storey, three-bay structure of slated, harled and whitened construction in the Georgian manner. The centrally placed entrance door comprises four panels, flanked by three-pane side lights and topped with a plain segmental fanlight. The ground floor windows are 16-pane sashes, while the three first-floor windows above contain twelve panes. The north-east gable carries two windows positioned close to the left (rear) side of the building: at ground floor a long narrow window with four panes, and at first-floor level a six-pane sash (four over two) with its rear edge aligning with the ground-floor window. The rear elevation features a centrally placed two-storey return with square-proportioned casement windows, and a small sash light serves the rear of the ground-floor room on the north-east side. The south-west gable is blank. Brick chimneys are located on the gables.
The gates and railings are notable features. The central garden gate and a side gate are both of similar detailed wrought iron construction to the boundary fence, each flanked by ribbed cast iron posts topped with finials. A larger courtyard gate on the north-east side follows the same pattern. These fittings date from the late 18th or early 19th century and represent a rare local survival.
The property is documented in the 1848 Griffith's Valuation, which records Mr W Thompson as tenant of the house, leasing from Reverend Peter Benson Maxwell, with a valuation of £2 5s 0d. The 1830 Ordnance Survey map shows buildings on both sides of the road forming an almost continuous group in this locality, a pattern that persists on the 1924 map but is reduced to the present arrangement of a single building with outhouses by 1963.
A two-storey return was added to the rear of the house during the 1950s by the occupant's mother, who was a teacher at Faughanvale School. The building was listed as Grade B on 25 May 1978 and subsequently upgraded to B1. Substantial renovation works were carried out in 1993 with grant aid, including window replacement, harling renewal, and roof works. The house is well proportioned and retains architectural quality, though some original Georgian detailing around the entrance has probably been lost. The extent of listing includes the house, gate, and railings.
