Hydraulic Ram, Carnamuff Townland, Limavady, Co Londonderry, BT49

This is a hydraulic ram, likely constructed between 1960 and 1979, located in Carnamuff townland, near Limavady, County Londonderry. The ram is of industrial archaeological interest due to its use of water power to assist in farming practices, specifically pumping water for livestock. It is one of two similar hydraulic rams situated beside a small, unnamed stream.

The system functions as a simple pump, using the kinetic energy of the water to raise a portion of it to a greater height. The setup includes a weir feeding into an underground pipe, the route of which is indicated by a ridge along the bank. The pipe then emerges approximately ten metres downstream into a rectangular concrete box covered with a tin roof. Although not considered to have architectural merit, the ram is an unusual and intriguing feature of the landscape. The device was used to pump water from the stream to a tank, providing water for cows. It was first recorded on Ordnance Survey maps. A nearby ram bears a plaque indicating a construction date of 1961, suggesting a similar timeframe for this system. The hydraulic ram is currently recorded as derelict.
