Hydraulic Ram, Carnamuff Townland, Limavady, Co Londonderry

This is a hydraulic ram house, likely constructed between 1960 and 1979. Situated in Carnamuff Townland, near Limavady in County Londonderry, it stands alongside a small, unnamed stream and is one of two similar structures (HB02/03/020A). The ram’s pump mechanism is aligned parallel to the weir of its neighbouring hydraulic ram. The mechanism is housed within a concrete box, measuring 1300mm high, 900mm wide, and 1200mm long, which is covered by a corroded corrugated metal roof. A small plaque on the east side bears the inscription '1961', likely indicating a construction or modification date. The pump draws water from a weir located approximately ten metres upstream via an underground pipe, the route of which is visible as a ground ridge. A smaller pipe emerges downstream of the pump and follows the river for ten metres before re-emerging near the pump of the second ram. The structure was first recorded on the current Ordnance Survey maps. The ramp was used to raise water from the river to a tank, which fed cows. It’s currently recorded as derelict, and holds industrial archaeological interest due to its use of water power to aid farming.
