Description
This is a late 18th century stone bridge located on the Nedd Road, near Ballykelly, County Londonderry. The bridge, built between 1800 and 1819, sits in a pleasant glen environment alongside the Ballykelly Burn, and marks an interesting point on the road as it follows the valley. It is of industrial archaeological interest.
The bridge features a single arch with a six-metre span, constructed from schist stone over the Ballykelly Burn, where the stream makes a right-angle bend. The segmental arch is formed from thin schist voissoirs, and it is flanked by straight parapets finished with a hogsback coping.
The bridge was not shown on the 1830 Ordnance Survey map, although the road did cross the river at this point; it does appear on the 1848 Ordnance Survey map, and is referenced in the 1848 Ordnance Survey Memoirs, Volume 25. The bridge is situated downstream from Lackagh Bridge and shares a similar appearance with that structure.
