Description

The Angler’s Arms is a three-bay, two-and-a-half-story public house terrace, likely dating to the late 18th century, although its appearance has been significantly altered over time. It is located on North Street in Ballycastle, forming part of a terrace between Quay Road and Strandview Road, within the Town Parks townland.

The building’s frontage to North Street features a central door with a fanlight, flanked by two large windows on each side, each window divided into four lights, with two of the lights fitted with top-hung opening vents. At the first floor are three vertical windows with two panes each, also with top-hung vents. Hanging signs are positioned between the windows. The walls are rendered in pebbledash, with a half-round metal gutter and a single downpipe. A slight overhang is present. A large, extended dormer, almost the full length of the building, rises from the roof, featuring three gables with a flat roof between them. Each gable incorporates a casement window with a single light in the centre, and the dormer is clad in white PVC. The remainder of the roof is slated, with two large chimney stacks at each end of the ridge. Above the ground floor bar window on the left, the public house’s name is displayed in bold lettering, without a fascia. The building has two long returns to the rear.

While the building probably dates to the late 18th century, it has undergone numerous alterations in subsequent centuries, with recent 20th-century renovations substantially removing its original character. The building has a higher ridge line than adjacent properties, and the extended dormer makes it prominent within the terrace. The building was in use as a public house terrace from the late 1800s, and remains so today. It is located within a conservation area. The building was delisted on March 1, 2005.
