Description

Atlantic House is a mid-19th century terrace house, later adapted for use as a small hotel. Its precise construction date is thought to be between 1860 and 1879, although it may represent a rebuilding of an earlier property on the site. The building is four bays wide and three-and-a-half stories high, with a frontage onto North Street. The ground floor features a former doorway, a built-up window, a four-panelled door with a rectangular fanlight, another entrance with double-glazed and framed doors set within a wide plaster band with a mock keystone, and a name fascia indicating the building's title. At the first floor are four double-hung sash windows with two panes of glass, two of which are separated by a slender pier. Three similar windows are positioned above these at the second floor. A half-round PVC gutter runs along the roof, shared with the adjoining property, and there are no visible downpipes. The roof is covered in natural slates and features two large, tall, canted dormers characteristic of lowland Scotland. Each dormer has a central double-hung sash window with four panes of glass and narrower double-hung sash windows with two panes of glass on the canted sides. Large chimneys are located at each end of the ridge. The rear elevation, visible from other properties, presents a flat-roofed three-story return with a modern timber fixed window fitted with a top-hung vent. A timber fire escape stairway abuts the rear wall of the front building, and a flat-roofed dormer projects from the rear roof. Shopfronts and returns were altered in the late 20th century. The building is situated within the Ballycastle Conservation Area and is in private ownership, though it was delisted on March 1st, 2005.
