Description

This is a simple, 3-bay, 2-storey house dating from around 1900, situated on Bayview Road in Ballycastle, County Antrim. The house is well-maintained, and its white painted roughcast exterior blends well with the surrounding harbour scene.

The house features a gabled design with a back return. The front elevation incorporates a central, shallow, lean-to roofed porch with a doorway in the side wall and a large picture window facing the street. Flanking the porch are wide windows, each subdivided into four panes and fitted with small top-hung vents. Above, three double-hung, 4-pane windows are visible. A slight eaves overhang is punctuated by a half-round gutter and a single downpipe. The walls are roughcast rendered, with a smooth plastered plinth, rusticated quoins, and a band beneath the gutter. The north gable is windowless, while the other gable features a single double-hung, 4-pane window at first floor level, slightly offset towards the rear, and a ground floor side porch. The barge overhangs on each gable are pronounced, fixed to projecting purlins, and finished with a large circular detail containing a 5-pointed star surrounded by shamrocks; this same feature is present on the adjacent property at No. 3 Bayview Road. The back return is a single bay, 1½ storeys high, with a tall chimney stack on the gable and several double-hung, 4-pane windows. The house sits back from the footpath on slightly raised ground, with a garden to the front and a walled yard to the rear, bordering North Street. The house offers a fine view of the harbour, marina, and Rathlin Island.

The house was likely built around 1900 by a builder named Humphries for his daughter. He is also believed to have constructed several of the neighbouring houses. The building dates from between 1880 and 1899.
