Description

10 North Street is a terrace house in Ballycastle, located between Quay Road and Strandview Road within the conservation area. Built in the latter part of the 19th century, probably between 1860 and 1879, it represents the linking of two mid-19th century houses, with later alterations that have created a disjointed but lively architectural façade.

The building is six bays wide and three storeys high, fronting North Street. The ground floor features a central double doorway set beneath a segmental arch with a central piece between, moulded pilaster and architrave detailing on each side, and a meagre keystone. To the left stands a shopfront serving a café, with an entrance door leading to a small porch. The shop window is large, with both elements framed by pilasters and overhung by a deep name fascia with cornice. To the right are two double-hung sliding sash windows with two panes each, plain plaster architrave and keystones, and a four-panelled door with rectangular fanlight and surround featuring heavy moulded architrave similar to the central arched feature.

The first floor on the left contains three double-hung sliding sash windows with four panes each and exposed sash boxes, repeated at second floor with a plain band linking the sills to form a stringcourse. Under the gutter runs a corbel course. To the right at first floor sits a large central canted oriel window with three double-hung sliding sash windows of two panes each. The oriel gathers beneath its sill into a large decorative plaster corbel, and its faceted roof is slated. Flanking the oriel on each side is one double-hung sliding sash window with two unequal panes, plain wide architrave, slightly segmented head with keystone. The first-floor level on the right side is considerably higher than the adjoining section. This portion reads as two and a half storeys, with a large gabled dormer centred over the oriel breaking the eaves line and containing two double-hung sliding sash windows with two panes each. The deep bargeboards are tied with a couple complete with kingpost. The roofs are covered in natural slates with chimney stacks at each end and one in the middle; there is a slight difference in ridge lines.

The elaborate oriel window and plaster details are considerably later in date than the building's original construction. The central archway may originally have functioned as a coach entrance, similar to Nos. 4 and 5 nearby. The plasterwork may reflect Italian influence, as the property belonged to Mrs M Bertucelli until 1981. The building underwent conversion to restaurant use from the mid-1980s onwards, which involved substantial interior renovations and modifications to the façade and rear returns. The rear features a large back return with windows altered to suit the new use. The west gable rises high above No. 11, which is only two storeys. It is likely that earlier buildings of the late 18th century were demolished to make way for the present structures. The building's architectural interest has been reduced by these substantial alterations, though it remains part of a significant terrace sequence.
