Description

Rosemary Cottage is a modest, one-and-a-half storey house built in the mid-19th century, likely between 1840 and 1859. It retains many of its original features and its design contributes to the character of the surrounding area. The cottage is approximately three bays wide and stands detached, located near the end of a terrace.

The front elevation facing North Street features a slightly off-centre panelled entrance door with a painted plaster surround in a style resembling Art Deco. Either side of the door are double-hung, eight-pane sash windows, each framed by a painted, plain plaster architrave and sill. The exterior walls are roughcast rendered with a painted smooth plinth and painted quoins. A corbel course runs under the eaves, supporting a half-round metal gutter and a single downpipe. The roof is natural slate, gabled, with chimney stacks on each side. Two gabled dormers, featuring decorative bargeboards and slated details, project from the roof space above the windows. The rear of the house has a similar door and windows, though the rear windows are modern. Adjoining the back door is a lean-to store with brick and plastered walls and a corrugated iron roof, lit by a single, two-pane iron rooflight. The northwest gable has two small windows: one is a double-hung, eight-pane sash window, and the other is a small casement window.

The house generally aligns with the terrace building line, separated from number 26 by a narrow gap, and from the significantly larger guesthouse/hotel at number 28 by a wider gap and a laneway. The cottage appears on an Ordnance Survey map dating to 1855, and was reportedly built in 1847. It was originally used as a house and currently retains that use, remaining in private ownership. Alterations to the building detract from its original character.
