Description

116 Highlands Road is a two-storey Victorian house built in 1894 for James Morrison in Clagan, County Londonderry. The architect was possibly Given of Limavady, who is known to have designed similar houses in Broighter and on Polly's Brae Road. The house is described as an unremarkable high Victorian dwelling, similar in plan to Bella Vista House in Altnagelvin but less competently resolved, though its proportions are well considered and its interior has been faithfully preserved.

The main elevation faces north-west onto a gravel drive and consists of three bays. It has rendered walls and a natural slate roof with tall two-stage yellow brick chimneys. Two-pane sash windows with decorative barge trusses are a notable feature. The central porch on the south-west side has double doors and a pitched roof with a parapet surmounted by decorative metalwork on each side. Above the porch is a single double sash window set as a dormer. A similar window appears on the south-west bay with a pair of windows aligned below. The north-east bay projects one metre from the facade as a gable with decorative barge boards, featuring a single window to the first floor and a pair below. The north-east elevation presents a gable surmounted by a chimney overlooking the well-tended garden. The barge trusses supported on sprockets have been enclosed, and decorative finials that were originally at their ends have been removed. The rear elevation is less regimented in its fenestration. A flat-roofed rectangular bay window projects from the ground floor near the front, added in the 1920s. A single storey modern kitchen extension with patio doors extends to the back.

The property is historically significant as the homestead of Robert Morrison, an ancestor of the present occupants, who was one of two Apprentice Boys of the Siege of Derry from Clagan townland; the other was Daniel Sherrard. According to Griffith's Valuation of 1858, James Morrison was renting the land from J Ogilby of Pelipar House, Dungiven, with a valuation of £4 15s 0d for the buildings. The present owners are descendants of the Morrison family, with the last person bearing that surname being the grandmother of the current owner as of 1998.

In the farmyard are two stone barns and a modern steel hay shed. One of the stone barns is the former farmhouse, claimed to date from the 1630s, though all historic fittings have been removed and it has been converted to agricultural use. This represents a good example of a Victorian replacement dwelling with the old house converted to a barn, similar to Nedd House.

The area of Clagan and neighbouring Upper Culmore townlands preserves the historic "rundale" system of farm arrangement, where clusters of farms are located at the centre of mixed ownership field systems. It is significant that these buildings remain on the former Ogilby Estate rather than on the holdings of the reformist Fishmongers Estate, where all traces of similar groupings have disappeared. The seventeenth-century date claimed for the old farmhouse may therefore be accurate.
