Description

This is a well-preserved example of a field gate and accompanying stone piers, dating from the late Georgian to early 19th century, likely between 1820 and 1839. The structure is whitewashed with a cement-rendered capping and is located at the corner of a triangular field alongside Glenhead Road, which connects the junction of Glenhead and Baranailt Roads to the crossroads at Ballydarrog. The roadside verges on either side of the gate are neatly trimmed, featuring evenly spaced hedge trees on the south side, likely planted by the Horner family who resided at the nearby house (HB02/03/005).

The gate piers are circular, constructed of stone, and stand 1.8 metres high with a diameter of approximately 75 centimetres. They are spaced about 3 metres apart and feature flat, conical copings. The wrought iron field gate is hung between the piers and retains its original handmade appearance, consisting of six horizontal flat iron bars, two square-section vertical bars (one centrally located), and a central bar with two flat diagonal elements extending from the bottom corners to the top centre. The gate’s sides are held in sockets within the ground and secured at the top by bent cramps built into the piers, with a flat draw iron bolt fitting into a slot within each pier.

These gate piers represent a typical design for the area, likely originating from an estate policy. They contribute significantly to the character of this rural road. The building's vernacular style and proportions, combined with its social and cultural importance, make it a notable feature of the landscape.
