Description
Highlands Primary School is a small, single-storey country school built in 1909. It is of historical consequence to the surrounding community, though possesses no great architectural merit. The setting is partly marred by an adjacent council estate. It originally functioned as a national school, replacing a previous school located 50 metres away on Baranailt Road. The school closed in June 1982 due to falling enrolment, and the building subsequently reverted to the McDonald Tyler Estate before being sold to Limavady Council in 1984 for use as a community hall.
The main building has harled and whitened walls and a natural slate roof, with a rear kitchen extension that is less detailed. It features a T-shaped plan, with a projecting gabled porch extending two metres from the front south-facing facade. Separate entrances on either side of the porch were presumably intended for boys and girls. The facade is characterized by two eight-pane metal casement windows centrally located, with a sandstone plaque reading "HIGHLANDS NATIONAL SCHOOL 1909" set between them. A small ventilator is located above the roof space. The porch gable projects as a parapet, with kneeler stone details at the eaves. To the west of the porch, a single eight-pane metal window is visible. The east side of the main facade features a blank wall. The west gable features a parapet, kneeler stone detail, and a red brick chimney surmounted by two tall eight-pane windows around the projecting flue. The kitchen extension at the rear is characterized by a lower eaves level and horizontally proportioned metal windows, with a projecting flue on its north-facing gable. A single tall window lights the back of the main school to the east of the extension, matching the gable detail. The east gable also has two eight-pane metal windows flanking a projecting chimney flue, with parapet walls ending in kneeler stones and a red brick chimney above. The school is set within a tarmac playground, enclosed by an 800mm high wall matching the school’s finish. A derelict building in a nearby field is likely the former teacher's house. The school’s origins trace back to 1822, when it was associated with the Kildare Street Society.
