Water Pump, Dromore Avenue, Highlands Road, Dromore, Ballykelly, Co Londonderry, BT49 9LX

This is a late 19th to early 20th century Victorian water pump of decorative design, situated at one side of a green in front of a row of post-Second World War council houses. The pump stands approximately 1200mm high and features a 150mm diameter stem ending in a square plate bolted to a concrete base. A shallow concrete trough extends beside the base, leading to a grating beside the road. The pump’s head is decorative, incorporating a ribbed collar at the top of the stem. Above this, the head expands to a width of 300mm in a concave ribbed circle, from which a 75mm diameter spout projects, terminating in a small finial. A collar below the spout bears the inscription 'J McCandless & Company Coleraine', and a bracket for the pump handle remains on the north side, although the handle itself is broken off near the hinge. The head then narrows to a convex ribbed curve of around 250mm diameter. The original top of the pump is missing and has been replaced by an in situ concrete curved cap – likely installed for safety reasons. A cast iron stem rises from a square plate fixed to a concrete base, which connects to a shallow concrete trough leading to a road grating. The pump is of industrial archaeological interest and was recorded as derelict. It is owned by the local government and it is believed to have been in use until at least the 1970s. The former Highlands Primary School is located nearby.
