Description
The site comprises a picturesque church ruin and associated graveyard. A church was originally founded in the 6th century and rebuilt in subsequent centuries, with a probable reconstruction occurring in the early 17th century.
The church ruins consist of a long, rectangular nave measuring 18½ metres long by 7½ metres wide, oriented along an east/west axis. A square projection, approximately 2½ metres square, is located at the northwest corner, which some interpret as the base of a former tower. The ruinous walls stand approximately 1.2 metres high. The east gable has been rebuilt and includes a pointed window. A possible door opening is located in the north wall, near the east end. The ruins are situated close to the Bessbrook river.
The surrounding graveyard covers approximately 0.3 hectares and contains a variety of headstones, ranging from old to relatively recent; one headstone is inscribed with the name Jane Ritchie, who died in 1832. Access to the site is provided by a gate set between two tall, square piers constructed from whinstone, which are similar to those found at Walworth.
According to local tradition, a church was founded at Tamlaght in 1585 by Colmcille and Finlough (Finlagan) was appointed as its caretaker. Following the Irish Church reforms of the 12th century, it is believed that the Tamlaght-Finlagan foundation became a parish church sometime after the synods of Kells and Rathbreasil, potentially in the 13th century. The possibility of the structure being used by 17th-century settlers is speculative; however, accounts suggest the prevalence of Protestant headstones within the graveyard, indicating possible restoration for use prior to the construction of the church at Walworth.
