Description
The Tamlaght Finlagan Rectory is a mid-19th century house built between 1860 and 1879, situated on Glebe land approximately 1000 metres east of Ballykelly, Limavady. It stands well back from the road and is set within a large garden with a long, winding approach avenue.
The house is a two-storey, three-bay wide building with smooth rendered walls and a sandstone plinth, featuring a projecting porch. The entrance is located on the side, with the principal facade exhibiting a symmetrical design, broken only by a narrow breakfront mirrored in the eaves. A small, panelled stone pier, connected to the house by a decorative cast iron railing, marks the steps to the front door, introducing a minor asymmetrical element. The east facade has a three-bay design with a ground floor canted bay window to the principal room; the west facade is of similar width but features only two windows on each floor. All windows are sliding sash windows, mullioned and divided into two panes.
A back return, aligned with the east facade, extends towards a stable range, which helps to enclose a yard on the house's side. A wide gateway, flanked by tall piers and a side door surmounted by a pediment, is incorporated into the connecting wall between the stables and the house. The roof is slated and triple-pile, with a narrow section covering the hall and staircase, and another two sections over the principal rooms. Widely spaced modillons and cast iron ogee gutters define the eaves. Fireplaces are situated on internal walls. The wall angles are emphasised by large, somewhat crude quoins. Virginia creeper covers the front of the house and extends to the sides. The grounds are scattered with trees, and a small walled garden is located adjacent to the west side.
The rectory is of local historical interest and demonstrates quality in its construction and survival of interior features. It was built in 1863. It was originally used, and currently remains in use, as a rectory or manse. The ownership is held by the Church of Ireland.
