Description
This is a pleasing former gate lodge dating from the 1920s, and has been elegantly renovated and restored with minor modifications. Set back slightly from the building line of Quay Road, it contributes to the charm of its setting and the approach to Silverstream House.
The lodge is a one-and-a-half storey, three-bay building with a single-storey back return. The Quay Road elevation is an asymmetrical composition, with an off-centre, timber-sheeted doorway featuring an emphasised lintel and a double-hung, four-pane sliding sash window. To the right of the doorway is a four-pane window, and another is positioned slightly further to the left. Above the last window is a gabled dormer with a double-hung, four-pane sliding sash window. Decorative bargeboards are present on the dormer, and eaves overhang. Ground floor window cills have deterrent grills. The walls are roughcast and painted white. The roof is natural slate, with a single chimney stack on the ridge. A metal downpipe and gutter run along the roofline. The southwest gable features a central, double-hung, four-pane sliding sash window, with another directly above. The steep pitched roofline has decorative bargeboards and an overhang. The other gable is similarly treated. The back return has unequal roof lengths and regularly spaced double-hung, four-pane sliding sash windows, matching those on the rear of Silverstream House. The gable window is double-light, and the window on the southwest wall is slightly larger than the others. The property includes screen walls to the back of the footwalk, with the southwest wall curving as if forming a gateway. However, the actual gateway to the grounds of Silverstream House was located several metres southwest.
The lodge was built sometime before 1929, and does not appear on an Ordnance Survey map of 1904. It was occupied by Major and Mrs. King while they oversaw the construction of Silverstream House. The lodge underwent substantial renovation and rebuilding during the development of the Silverstream House grounds, and the present owners have occupied the property since. The lodge is located within the Ballycastle Conservation Area.
