Description

Castleraw is a significant ruin of a 17th-century house, designated as an ancient monument. The ruin comprises a sunken area, likely a basement storey, laid out in a cruciform shape. Remaining walls include a tall section, originally two stories high, with a featureless opening. The construction is of limestone rubble, and the site is partially overgrown with vegetation.

The house was built between 1618 and 1619 for Anthony Cope, as documented in Pynnar’s report of that time. Cope drew the cruciform plan from examples in his family's ancestral region in Northamptonshire, England, such as Gayton and Lyveden New Building. Anthony Cope was the third son of Sir Anthony Cope of Hanwell in Oxfordshire, who had acquired the manors of Derrycreevy and Drumilly from Lord Saye and Sele, who had received them from King James I in 1610. These lands were surplus to Lord Saye and Sele’s requirements. Sir Anthony acquired the lands to settle his younger sons, and one of them, Anthony, built Castleraw, where he died on 10 March 1634. The house was burned in 1641 and replaced sometime before 1670 by another house, now demolished, near the present Manor House in Loughgall. Anthony Cope was the ancestor of the Copes of Loughgall Manor, while his brother Richard was the ancestor of the Copes of Drumilly. The ruin stands in a field, with the two-story wall close to a minor road. It is a scheduled monument, reference number Armagh 9:4, and is recorded as derelict.
