Ice house, Manor House demesne, Manor Farm, Loughgall, Co Armagh

This is a well-preserved domestic ice house, likely dating from the early Victorian era, probably between 1840 and 1859. It forms an integral part of the grounds of Loughgall Manor House.

The ice house consists of a short, vaulted passage that leads to a vaulted, oblong chamber built into the side of a hill. The entrance, facing east, is a rubble stone segmental arched opening, roughly shouldered, set into an overgrown earthen bank. It contains a slightly recessed brickwork tympanum above a rectangular doorway, which is open and lacks a door. The passage has a screed-covered cobbled floor and rubble stone walls rising to a semi-circular brick and rubble vaulted roof. A modern rectangular steel-barred door, set within an original rubble stone and modern brick plinth wall and surmounted by a rubble stone tympanum, is set into the rear wall. This door provides access to, and a view into, a brick-lined, domical vaulted chamber of circular cross section, which descends well below ground level.

The structure is situated within the demesne of Loughgall Manor House, on a hillside within the gardens and surrounded by trees. It is shown on an Ordnance Survey map of 1908, and was likely constructed to serve the new Manor House built around 1840. It did not appear on Ordnance Survey maps from 1834 and 1860. The ice house is located within a conservation area.
