Description
Rose Cottage is a 19th-century house, sensitively extended in the 20th century, retaining character and charm of historic interest with some original features and traditional detailing. The building was substantially rebuilt or constructed between 1840 and 1859, though a smaller structure occupied the site in 1834. The projecting gabled porch was added later, not appearing until the 1908 Ordnance Survey map.
The house is a single-storey gabled structure of three bays with a gabled rear return and a gabled extension to one end. The main entrance faces south. The south elevation displays three bays with one window to each side of a projecting gabled porch. The roof is covered in Bangor blue slates in regular courses, with cast iron rainwater goods and two red brick chimneys, one on each gable, each with a new open-sided rectangular brick superstructure. The main block walls are of limestone rubble with roughly shaped quoins at the extremities, featuring red brick block dressings and flat arches to windows. Windows in the main block are rectangular timber sliding sash, vertically hung, six over six panes without horns, set in exposed sash boxes.
The porch features red brick walling bearing traces of lime-wash, with shaped timber bargeboards to the gable. The main entrance is a rectangular timber panelled door surmounted by a decoratively glazed rectangular fanlight, set in smooth rendered reveals with unpainted timber lintel. Windows in the porch's side wall are small rectangular timber sliding sash, two over four panes without horns, with exposed sash boxes in plain reveals and unpainted timber lintels. A single-storey wing extends to the left, set back almost to the rear wall of the main block's gable. This appears to be an entirely new addition with slated roof, limestone rubble walling, cast iron rainwater goods, and dressings matching the main block. It contains one window similar to those of the porch.
The west elevation of the main block is a limestone rubble gable with roughly shaped quoins, featuring a projecting central chimney breast in rubble stonework. One window at attic level, to the left-hand side, is a timber sash as in the front porch, set in brick reveals with unpainted timber lintel. The west elevation of the set-back wing is a plain blind limestone rubble gable.
The north or rear elevation comprises the main block to the left and the wing to the right. The main block has a slated roof with one modern flush rooflight to each side of a central gabled rear return. The original rear wall is now obscured by single-storey flat-roofed extensions on each side of the return. The extension to the left is a single bay with a large modern rectangular window in a rubble wall. The extension to the right of the rear return is two bays of rubble limestone, containing a rectangular glazed ledged timber door with small panes and a small timber window sashed as in the front porch, set in plain reveals with a flat arch head in red brick.
The central rear return is gabled, though its ridge is now at the same height as that of the main block, whereas originally it was much lower. The return gable is now two storeys, whereas originally it was one storey. At ground floor, a pair of coupled timber sashed windows, each six over six without horns, set in plain reveals, is surmounted by an original segmental red brick relieving arch; this window was created from an original doorway. At first floor or attic level, a small timber sashed window as in the front porch is set in plain reveals with a brick flat arch. A PVC downpipe stands to the left of the ground floor window. To the right of the return, projecting slightly, is a newly built wing with slated roof, limestone rubble walling, and cast iron rainwater goods as elsewhere but with a PVC soilpipe. It contains one window: a new pair of coupled rectangular timber sliding sashes, each window six over six without horns, set in a segmental brick arch. A newly built red brick chimney stack rises from the left-hand wall of the rear return.
The east elevation comprises the main block's gable to the left with a later modern flat-roofed extension or infill room to the right. The gable is of rubble stonework similar to the west gable and contains one small window at attic level to the left: timber sash, two over two panes, as in the front porch. The extension to the right is two bays of rubble stonework, containing a new rectangular door and a large new modern rectangular window.
The building stands within its own grounds on an elevated site, facing a narrow lane off the main street but set well back from it. Access is by a tarmac driveway extending to the east side of the house. Lawns and grassed areas occupy the front and rear with shrubs and other plantings. To the rear of the house is a single-storey gabled outbuilding, a new building with slated roof, rubble walls, timber sheeted doors, and a sashed window. It is connected to the rear of the wing by a rubble stone screen wall containing a small timber gate. The grounds merge with those of the adjacent former courthouse. The property is located within a conservation area.
