Description
This is a single-storey, four-bay vernacular dwelling, likely dating from between 1820 and 1839, situated at the junction of Eagralougher Road and Ballymagerny Road in the townland of Ballymagerny. It retains some historic fabric but has undergone alterations, notably to its window and door openings.
The building has a pitched tin roof with shallow projecting eaves and a central red brick chimney stack. The walls are a mix of whitewashed lime-rendered mudwall and rubble stone. The north-facing principal elevation features square-headed window openings with plain reveals and timber windows. A square-headed door opening in the third bay has a slightly projecting red brick and rendered surround, topped with a Welsh slate canopy and a timber-sheeted door with cast-iron door furniture. The east elevation is largely obscured by overgrown vegetation, but a corrugated-iron abutment is visible adjoining the east gable wall. The south elevation has three windows, while the west elevation displays a red brick verge to the gable. Significant damage to the walling of the westernmost bay is evident, along with evidence of repairs.
The house is set back from the road behind a garden and enclosed by a low masonry wall to the north and east, and a wooden and steel-mesh fence to the south and west. The surrounding setting is characterised by farmland and farm buildings. The roof is tin, the walls are masonry, mud, and lime-rendered, and the windows are timber.
57, Eagralougher Road first appeared on the Ordnance Survey Northern Ireland First Edition map of 1833, and its plan form has remained unchanged since. It is also shown on Griffith’s Valuation map of 1862, where it was owned and occupied by William Orr, valued at £1 and 5 shillings. Evidence found within the property, such as newspapers and a calendar, suggests the building has been vacant since 1994 and now stands in a derelict state. Although it contributes to its rural setting and possesses local historic interest, insufficient evidence exists to justify listing for its special architectural or historic value.
