Pump No. 2, Park Lane, Gilford, Co. Down

This is a good example of a cowtail water pump, likely dating from between 1900 and 1919. It exhibits group value with the other pumps located in Park Lane. The pump is of a closed head lever design, featuring a plain column topped with a fluted cap. The column is inscribed with a flag logo, indicating it was manufactured by Lee Howl & Co. of Tipton, England, along with the inscription “3”. It is probably a 'Paragon strong yard pump' or deep well pump. The pump is situated in a field accessed by an unsurfaced lane, and is accompanied by a nearby galvanised drinking trough. Its location, away from houses, suggests a former agricultural use. While the history of the pump is currently unknown, further details can be found in the Environment Heritage Service Report 'Water Pumps in Northern Ireland: A Preliminary Survey' by Fred Hammond (January 1997, Pump no. 58). The pump is currently privately owned, was once recorded as derelict, and is considered to be of industrial archaeological interest, notable for its style, proportions, ornamentation, and setting.
