Description
Roddans House is a large, sprawling L-shaped house of pre-1834 origin, set on a rise and partly arranged around a lower-level courtyard with associated farm buildings and stables. The complex sits on elevated ground to the north, accessed by a long driveway, with the courtyard section positioned to the southwest at a lower level. The building's unusual form means it can be entered at various levels, and its façade is informally arranged as a result of this irregular topography.
The main northern section of the house was probably originally Georgian in style with a hipped roof, though this original form is now largely obscured by modern extensions. These include a full-height flat-roofed extension to the east, a single-storey hipped-roof extension to the north, a large conservatory, and a further single-storey flat-roofed extension to the west. The main body is finished in roughcast render. There appears to be a timber and glazed front door on the east elevation, though this now appears unused; entry is more commonly made through the lower-level courtyard section to the southwest. The main northern section features modern windows with horizontal and vertical astragals, while the windows throughout the courtyard section are similarly modern with astragals, and various window and door openings have been altered.
The courtyard section appears substantially intact beneath these modifications. The front section of the house shows evidence of alteration in the mid-twentieth century, possibly following a fire approximately thirty years before the survey was made, and the interior layout was also altered at that time.
The farm buildings and stables that form the remainder of the courtyard are substantially intact and arguably of greater architectural merit than the house itself. These are mainly rubble built with hipped roofs and are partly whitewashed. The courtyard is entered at the southeast through a large elliptical-headed arch set in a tall buttressed rubble wall, with a smaller pedestrian arch opposite to the southwest leading into a secondary courtyard with mainly single-storey stables.
The house and surrounding complex, minus the modern extensions, are shown on the Ordnance Survey Map of 1834. Very little concrete historical information has been established concerning the building. Family papers of the Orr and McClure families held at PRONI, dating possibly to the early 1700s and relating to the area, may contain relevant information, though these remain unlisted and currently unavailable.
