Description

A relatively plain two-storey rendered terrace block with hipped roof, originally built as lighthouse keepers' dwellings. The building overlooks the coastline to the north of Donaghadee and comprises five properties: numbers 53, 55, 57, 59, and 61.

Although its conservative late Georgian style appearance suggests it could date from the 1850s or 1860s, evidence indicates it was more likely constructed around 1884. The building does not appear on the Ordnance Survey map of 1858-60 and probably dates from the same period as the new lighthouse on Mew Island, replacing the keepers' dwellings that had served the earlier lighthouse on Light House Island. The relatively spacious interior and remaining internal detailing support this later construction date.

The properties are symmetrically arranged. The south-east wing contains all of number 53 and part of number 55; the north-west wing contains all of number 61 and part of 59; with the main central portion housing the remainder of numbers 55 and 59, with number 57 between them.

Number 59 has an asymmetrical north-east facing elevation. To the right of centre is a large full-height hipped roof projecting bay. Between the bay and the rest of the elevation is a single-storey flat-roofed entrance porch with panelled door facing south-east and a window facing north-east. The porch window has a sash frame with Georgian-style panes (2 over 4) and label moulding, with a tall parapet featuring a cornice-like string course. To the left of the porch is a sash window with 6/6 Georgian panes and label moulding. To the right, on the ground floor of the bay, is an identical window. The first floor has three similar windows without label moulding, the rightmost being on the bay. To the short south-east elevation (shared with number 61) are ground and first floor windows corresponding to those on the front.

The rear south-east elevation is partially covered at ground floor level by a lean-to section with three windows of varying size: one with 2/2 sash frame and others of more modern type. Above the lean-to on the first floor right is a 6/3 sash window. The rear south-west elevation features a large, relatively recent glazed porch at ground floor level, abutting the lean-to. Two windows appear on the first floor: the left matching the first floor front, and the right a fixed light with Georgian panes.

The façade is rendered and painted white, with eaves course and bevelled base. The hipped roof is slated, as is the lean-to. Two relatively tall rendered chimney stacks are present; the north-west stack is shared with numbers 57 and 61. Cast iron rainwater goods are fitted throughout. A small enclosed yard contains what appear to be two small single-storey lean-to sheds or outhouses.

Number 59 has retained its original appearance both front and back, though a glazed porch has been added to the rear.

The entire rear of the terrace block gained a line of modern single-storey garages constructed around 1969, positioned just beyond the back yards of each house.

In the 1960s, after the dwellings ceased to be used as lighthouse staff accommodation, the entire block was sold as a single unit. The new owner added the rear garages. From around 1970 onwards, the individual dwellings were sold as separate properties. Number 63, at the north-west end, was used for much of the 20th century as a store stocking provisions for the lighthouse.
