Description

The remains are of a single-story vernacular terrace, likely built between 1820 and 1839, although the construction date is probably before 1834. The terrace, consisting of four dwellings, was located west of Scrabo Road, approximately one mile southwest of Newtownards, County Down. It was demolished around the 1980s and the site is now occupied by a modern dwelling built around the late 1980s.

The terrace originally had mainly sash windows, a slated roof, and doors with plain surrounds. The front elevation featured a repeating pattern of window - door - window - door - window - door - window, with the first, second, and fourth windows being double-hung sashes with horizontal astragals. The third window was a double-hung sash without astragals. A more recent steel casement window replaced one original window, and all doorways had plain stone surrounds and sheeted doors. A stone platform, ranging from nil to approximately two and a half feet high, existed in front of the terrace. Small sheds were located at each end of the building. The main block and frontage were in fair condition, extending roughly 80 feet. Gable ends were present and chimneys were constructed from brick, stone, and concrete blocks. The walls were finished with a grey roughcast render.

The site was depicted on Ordnance Survey maps from 1834 and 1858, accurately representing the layout of the demolished terrace. The buildings were assessed as being below rateable value during the first valuation in approximately 1835, and again when assessed in 1863. Records indicate the property was in use as dwellings at the time of the 1863 valuation, and remained below rateable value.
