Description

Campview is a two storey gabled house of rubble construction, situated on the west side of Scrabo Road and set into the steep bank of Scrabo Hill, almost directly below the Londonderry monument. The building dates from the 1840s-50s, though it probably incorporates fabric from an earlier structure shown on the Ordnance Survey map of 1833-34. The entire complex, including extensive outbuildings, appears to have been of considerable local importance and may have had connections with the nearby quarries on Scrabo Hill.

The front facade faces east. To the right of centre is an 'Ards' doorway with plain pilasters, keystone, and a timber panelled door with semicircular head and leaded fanlight. The name 'Campview' is painted on the door surround. To the left of the doorway are two windows with modern timber frames; a similar window appears to the right. The first floor has three similar windows, with a modern oriel window to the far left covering a larger opening that was formerly a store loft door, complete with a small pulley projection above.

Attached to the north gable is a long row of two storey outbuildings, slightly shorter than the house and now somewhat dilapidated. The east facade of these outbuildings has two doorways on the ground floor (the left with a timber sheeted door) and three large openings with segmental arch heads and brick dressings, the rightmost fitted with a wrought iron gate. Above are four unevenly spaced store doorways with dilapidated timber sheeted doors.

Attached to the south gable is a smaller two level outbuilding, also badly dilapidated. Its east facade has a timber sheeted door to the left, a small window opening in the centre, and a large doorway to the right with timber sheeted sliding doors. The south gable has a small upper level window opening. The rear of this section sits directly into the steep bank of Scrabo Hill. The rear of the main house appears to have three windows to the upper floor and a single storey extension to the ground floor, though much is obscured by overgrown vegetation.

The entire main facade is unrendered and painted, though much of the paint is worn. The roofs are covered in Bangor blue slates with two greyish-yellow brick chimney stacks on the gables of the house. The house has been renovated in recent times and now has modern window frames.

On the opposite side of the road is a badly dilapidated collection of rubble built structures, now appearing as outbuildings but possibly once incorporating a dwelling. These buildings are situated on the slope of the hill below road level. They appear single storey at the roadside but are probably split level in part. One is built with its gable onto the roadside, with stone steps leading to a door on the gable. The roofs have lost much of their slates, and the area around them is badly overgrown.

The setting of the entire complex is unusual and somewhat unattractive. The proximity of the road to the house is notably hazardous, with the front entrance opening directly onto the road itself. The site is shown on Ordnance Survey maps of 1833-34 and 1858-60 much as it appears today, suggesting the layout has remained relatively consistent since the early nineteenth century.
