Former railway bridge, (W of Landsdowne estate), Castleaverry, Newtownards, Co. Down, BT23

This is a sandstone railway bridge built around 1848-50, located to the west of the Landsdowne estate, approximately a mile south of Newtownards, County Down. The bridge spans a narrow lane. It is constructed from coursed, rock-faced sandstone with a semicircular arch featuring V-jointed voussoirs. The bridge has curved approaches leading to abutments on both sides, and a parapet with coping and a projecting band below. The top of the bridge is overgrown. The bridge formed part of the Belfast & County Down Railway line, which connected Belfast, Comber, and Newtownards and opened in May 1850. The railway line was closed in 1953. The bridge is now unused, overgrown, and derelict, but appears largely intact. Its survival holds industrial archaeological interest.
