Description
A two and a half storey late Victorian terrace of seven houses built circa 1894-6, located on the north side of New Road adjacent to the junction with Warren Road, to the north of Donaghadee town centre. The terrace was constructed in two phases: numbers 3-11 were built in 1894, with numbers 13 and 15 added a year or two later and remaining physically separate from the rest.
All properties follow typical late Victorian terrace design, characterised by two storey canted bays, half-dormers, mildly classical mouldings and large returns. The south-facing asymmetric front façade of each house features a panelled timber front door positioned to the left of the ground floor, framed with reeded pilasters, reeded capitals and cornice supporting a moulded archivolt with decorative keystone and enclosing a plain semicircular fanlight. To the right is a two storey canted bay with flat roof. Windows throughout have two panes and rest on a sill course; the reveals of each window have a small chamfer detail. A moulded string course combined with a continuous sill course forms a plain frieze course. First floor windows rest on the sill course, with those in the bay slightly shorter than ground floor examples. Above is a further moulded string course. The bay is topped with a flat roof finished with a moulded copestone. To the centre of the eaves is a pair of semicircular headed windows with moulded drip and label stops, set within a gabled half-dormer featuring slight overhang to the eaves and plain timber bargeboards. The main roof is gabled and covered with natural slate. A tall chimney stack with simple mouldings and plain chimney pots rises to the right side. Cast iron ogee rainwater goods are present. String courses return slightly onto the gables, which are otherwise blank.
To the rear, a large two storey gabled return projects to the right side. The west face contains one small window to the right of the first floor. The first floor of the north face has a sash window to the right side. Ground floor additions of recent single storey construction are present to the returns. The ground floor west face of the return contains a kitchen window to the left and a door to the right. The left side of the first floor holds a small sash window. Three two-pane windows are positioned to the left of the return—one on each floor, with that to the second floor being smaller and set within a small half-dormer. A high yard wall obscures views of most ground floor rears. Main and return roofs are covered with natural slate, with cast iron rainwater goods throughout.
Individual variations are noted as follows: Number 15 has all modern timber windows and a plain sheeted front door. Number 13 features all sash windows. Number 11 has PVC windows to the front and sash windows (presumed) to the rear. Number 9 has PVC windows to the front and sash to the rear. Number 7 has PVC windows to the front and a mixture of sash and PVC to the rear; the cast iron gate to the front is stated by the owner to be the only surviving original example. Number 5 has PVC windows to front and rear, and a three storey rear return. Number 3 has modern timber windows to front and rear.
The entire terrace is shown on the Ordnance Survey town plan of Donaghadee of 1901.
