Description

This is a record of a former two-storey terraced block that once stood near the north end of Court Square in Newtownards. The building, which probably dated from the mid to late 1800s, contained a house and a public house known as 'The Bowling Green Bar'. It was demolished around 1994, and a new pub now occupies the site.

Before its demolition, the block presented a bland modern appearance, having undergone several alterations to its window and door arrangement during the 20th century. At the time of recording, the building retained a slated roof with rendered chimneys. The front walls were rendered, lined, and painted, with a frontage of approximately 50 feet.

Number 3 contained two first-floor and one ground-floor double-hung windows with horizontal astragals. Below the second window was a doorway framed with pilasters, frieze, lintel, and cornice moulding, with a sheeted door. Number 2, 'The Bowling Green Bar', had two small leaded first-floor windows and a large double-hung window without astragals. The ground floor featured a doorway similar to Number 3, followed by a recent pub window and another doorway with a panelled door. The building's condition was recorded as fair to poor.

The site lies within the medieval settlement of Newtown, north of the 13th-century priory. Colville's town plan of 1720 marks Court Square as 'Bowling Green', showing a row of dwellings on the west side of the green. By 1834, buildings appeared on the same site in the first Ordnance Survey map, by which time the green had become home to a cattle market. The row was extended southwards by 1858 to meet the newly cut Court Street. The building recorded here likely dated from the later 1800s and may have corresponded to houses noted in valuation records of 1863.
