Description
The Old Market Cross in Castle Place, Newtownards, Co. Down, is an octagonal market cross originally built in 1636 from Scrabo sandstone. It is believed that the structure underwent extensive repairs, and possibly a partial rebuild, in 1666. The cross was commissioned by Hugh Montgomery, or his son and heir. The sandstone features carved panels on each face. It formerly served as a market, and continues to be used as such. As a Scheduled Monument, the site is afforded statutory protection.
