Description
The remains of a market cross, dating from the medieval period, are located in the Old Churchyard of Buckingham. This structure is made of limestone and features a square base with shaped top corners, as well as a square shaft with chamfered corners and fleurons on the chamfers. Originally, the cross stood in the Horse Fair on West Street, near Castle House, until around 1800 when it was moved to the garden of the Dun Cow to serve as a pedestal for a sundial. It underwent several relocations before returning to Buckingham in 1858. The cross is now positioned in the Old Churchyard, marking the site of the west door of the medieval parish church, which was demolished in 1775 after the tower collapsed for the second time.
