Description
No. 10 Court Square was built between 1860 and 1879, likely just before 1875. It was probably constructed as a residence for the manager or assistant manager of the nearby Castle Gardens flax and tow spinning mill, which was established by George Walker. The house occupies the site of an earlier dwelling built around 1840 when Court Street (now part of Court Square) was initially laid out. Early occupants included John Stewart, followed by John Martin around 1896, who was described in the 1901 census as an 'estate bailiff', suggesting a possible end to the mill connection by that time. Later residents included John McAlpine around 1913 and William Boyle around 1923. Robert George Wilson resided there in 1943, followed by Christopher and Ellen Emo in the 1950s and 1960s. Mrs. Emo may have remained in the house until the late 1970s. The building is currently used as offices, having formerly been a house.
