Fire Station, Portaferry Road, Newtownards, Co. Down, BT23 3NN

This is a two-storey fire station built in the modern style, dating from approximately the 1960s. It is located on the north-west side of Portaferry Road, to the south-east of Newtownards town centre. The building has a roughly square plan and is primarily constructed of brick, with a largely flat roof. It rises to two storeys, but is taller to the south-east front, where the ground floor contains a high-ceilinged fire engine hall. A PVC glazed entrance screen is set within a bay on the south-east front, with a largely PVC glazed first floor above. To the right of this bay are three sets of large timber and glazed folding doors for fire engine exits. Above these doors, the facade is rendered and incorporates four square, fixed light windows. The north-east and south-west facades are largely plain, featuring modern windows of varying sizes with PVC frames. A fire escape is present on the south-west facade. A projecting, single-storey lean-to section extends from the rear, having been extended at some point. A two-storey section sits to the right of this lean-to, both incorporating PVC windows of various sizes. A slight overhang is present on most roof sections. A brick chimney stack is situated on the taller section at the front. The fire station demonstrates industrial archaeological interest.
