Site of former Comber Methodist Church, Bridge Street, Comber, Co. Down

The site stands on the north side of Bridge Street, Comber, and represents the location of a former Methodist church built in 1820. The original church was demolished around 1996 and replaced with a new, modern church on a slightly different location.

The original church, as recorded in a 1970 survey, was a single-story building with a lean-to extension at the rear and a front porch. It was set back from the street behind a low plinth wall and a wrought iron railing. The roof was slated with a gable facing the street. The walls were rendered, lined, and painted. The gable featured a roundel in the tympanum, ornamented with a quatrefoil and a label moulding, bearing the inscription "Methodist Mission Chapel 1820." Gothic windows, with two long panes and bevelled stone surrounds and label mouldings, were on each side of the porch. A later, austere gabled porch included a central drop hung sash window without astragals and a sheeted entrance door on the right-hand side. Three similar windows, lacking label mouldings, were on the flank of the building. Screen walls were positioned on either side of the gable. The building’s front was approximately 28 feet wide.

The church is depicted on the 1834 Ordnance Survey map without the porch and described in the 1837 Ordnance Survey memoirs as a "plain stone building capable of accommodating about 300 people." The porch was added in the early 1900s. Nothing remains of the original building, which was demolished circa 1996.
