49 Bridge Street, Comber, Co. Down, BT23 5AT

This is a small, two-storey terrace shop, likely built between 1780 and 1799. It originally functioned as a house and is situated on the southern side of Bridge Street in Comber. The front façade has been significantly altered with a large, modern shop window and a modern extension to the rear. The ground floor features a glazed and panelled doorway to the right, framed by plain pilasters, an entablature, and a cornice. To the left of the doorway is the modern shop window with a timber signboard above. Two windows with modern frames are present on the first floor. The rear extension is large and modern, with a flat roof and a mix of full and single-story heights. A window with a modern frame is visible on the exposed section of the main rear façade. The front façade is finished in lined render, while the rear is rough cast. The gabled roof is covered with asbestos-free slate, and there is a rendered chimney stack to the east. The building incorporates PVC rainwater goods. Although this part of Bridge Street appeared vacant on a map of Comber from 1722, it is shown as occupied on maps from 1793 onwards. It probably dates to the late 18th or early 19th century, appearing on the 1834 Ordnance Survey map and associated valuation records, where it was identified as the home of a Samuel McCann. When first surveyed in 1975, the property remained a house.
