Description

Substantial two-storey terrace house of pre-1834 origin, set on the north side of Bridge Street in Comber. The front elevation faces south and is almost symmetrical. At roughly the centre of the ground floor is a panelled door with a fanlight featuring curved tracery, encased with plain pilasters, entablature and cornice. To the left of the door are two sash windows with horizontal glazing bars in a two-over-two configuration. To the right are two similar windows, and the first floor carries five more windows of the same pattern but smaller in size. The façade is rendered and painted, with a narrow pilaster to each edge and a chamfered base.

The rear façade is constructed largely in greywacke rubble, except for the top two to three feet, which is largely in sandstone, suggesting the roof was raised slightly at some point. The ground floor rear has a window with a modern frame to the left. The first floor has two windows with similar modern frames, with another window at a lower landing level between them. A smaller upper landing window with a modern fixed light frame is positioned near the eaves. The gabled roof is covered in asbestos-free slates and has two small Velux windows to the rear. A rendered chimney stack stands to the west. The rainwater goods are cast iron and PVC.

Historical records show the site occupied on a 1722 map of Comber and on all subsequent maps thereafter. The dimensions of the present house match those recorded in the 1834 valuation returns, suggesting they are one and the same building. The valuers graded the property 'B+', indicating a reasonably old structure, probably of the 18th century, but in very good condition and possibly recently renovated at the time of assessment. This assessment likely relates to the roof raising—judged by the use of Scrabo sandstone, this probably occurred just prior to 1834. At the time of the first valuation in 1834, the house was occupied by a Widow McConnell and was also home to two tenants, James McKeige and William Moffit. The current owner's family has occupied the building since the early 1900s, and local tradition holds that the building formerly belonged to the parish church.

The addition of modern window frames to the rear and the later installation of asbestos-free slates to the roof detract from the historic character of the building.
