Description

6 Bridge Street, Comber, is a two-storey terrace building of late 18th-century origin, probably dating from between 1780 and 1799. The building is set on the north side of Bridge Street, with its front façade facing south.

The front façade is finished in lined render and painted. The focal point is a left-of-centre doorway with a semicircular radial fanlight, surrounded by narrow pilasters with brackets supporting a broken pediment. To the left of the doorway is a small sash window with Georgian panes (four over four). To the right of the doorway the render shows clear evidence of another doorway having been blocked up, suggesting the presence of a former shop front to the right-hand side, which may have been removed in the early 1900s or earlier. To the far left is a larger sash window (six over six), the frame of which appears to have been replaced recently; the render around this opening suggests it may once have been larger. On the first floor are three windows similar to the ground floor right window but slightly smaller. A relatively large blank space to the left of these windows on the first floor may indicate the former location of another window, though the interior layout makes this uncertain.

A small traditional-style projecting sign is positioned to the left of the doorway, with a flat signboard below it.

The rear façade is finished in unpainted cement render. On the ground floor to the left is a sash window matching the front right window. To the right is a relatively small single-storey lean-to extension with a modern window to the north face and doorway to the east face. On the first floor to the left is a sash window matching the front left window; to the right is a relatively narrow double sash window with both sashes four over four. The sash frames to the rear appear to be recent replacements.

The gabled roof is covered in natural slate with two Velux windows to the rear. Two rendered chimney stacks are present, with cast iron rainwater goods throughout.

Historical evidence confirms that the site was occupied as early as 1722 according to the Comber map. The 1834 valuation records indicate that the building, then belonging to George Allen, contained a house in the upper floors (occupied by Mrs. Hall) and an "office" (commercial premises) on the ground floor. This arrangement is reflected in the current interior layout, which features a relatively large entrance hallway consistent with commercial use. The building was graded "B-" by the valuers, supporting attribution to the later 18th century. The shop front appears to have been filled in by the mid-20th century, at which point the property became a dwelling house. Current use has reversed this arrangement, with the first floor now housing a shop whilst the ground floor remains vacant.
