Description

The Comber & District War Memorial was erected around 1922-23 as a monument to those from the Comber district who lost their lives in the Great War. It is located near the northwest corner of the pedestrianised area in the centre of The Square. The memorial features a stepped granite base with bevelled corners, supporting a square granite pedestal with bevelled edges and a stylised laurel leaf carving at the top. Bronze panels are set into recesses on each side of the pedestal, bearing the names of local men who died in the Great War and subsequent conflicts, including the Second World War. A life-size bronze statue of a soldier in 1914-18 battle dress stands atop the pedestal, inscribed at its base "L.S. Merrifield. Sc. 1922," indicating the sculptor’s work.
