Site of former 43 Bridge Street, Comber, Co. Down, BT23 5AT

The site represents the former location of a two-story terrace house, likely built before 1834, which was demolished around 1995 and replaced with a modern building, currently an amusement arcade. The original house was situated in the middle of a terrace on the south side of Bridge Street in Comber. A 1722 survey described the house as having a slated roof, rendered chimneys, and rendered walls painted cream. It featured four first-floor and three ground-floor windows with drop-hung sashes containing six-pane Georgian glass (no horns). The doorway, situated below the second window, had a plain stone surround and a relatively new panelled door. The building measured approximately 27½ feet by 22½ feet by 16 feet. A building is depicted on this site on a 1722 map, and on subsequent maps up to 1833. Valuation records from 1834 indicate that the house at that time probably corresponds to the structure that was later demolished. In 1833, the house was owned by a Michael Long. Primary source documentation includes surveys and maps within the Londonderry Papers at the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI) dating from 1722 and 1793-1833, valuation records from 1834 and 1861, and Ordnance Survey maps from 1834, 1858, and 1901.
