Site of former 36 Bridge Street, Comber, Co. Down, BT23 5AT

The site of a small, two-storey terraced house, dating to around 1830, was demolished around 1988. It is now occupied by part of a much larger, modern sheltered dwelling complex. Located in the middle of the terrace on the north side of Bridge Street, the house was described in a 1970 survey as having a slated roof, rendered chimneys, and walls constructed from dark brown sandstone in courses with filled joints. It featured two first-floor windows with drop-hung sashes and Georgian panes contained within a shouldered cement surround; one ground-floor window with horizontal astragals; and a doorway below the right-hand window with a stone surround and cornice moulding above the lintel. A decorated horizontal fanlight was positioned above the sheeted door. The front of the house was approximately 16 feet wide and in fair condition.

A building is shown on this site on a map of Comber dated 1722. The appearance and sandstone facade suggest a construction date around 1830, a suggestion supported by valuation records from 1834, which mention three newly built houses at this end of Bridge Street, all matching the property's dimensions. This particular house was likely occupied by a ‘Miss Carlile’ and had a rateable value of £4 10s. The house, along with its neighbour to the west, was demolished around 1988, and the site is now part of a larger modern sheltered housing complex extending west and north.
