Description
Varied terrace of one and two storey dwellings at the west end of Lower Crescent, on the north-east edge of Comber town centre, probably dating from around 1840 to 1860. The terrace comprises four gabled houses: one large two-storey house (No.2) and three much smaller properties (Nos.4, 6, and 8).
No.2 is a large two-storey former farmhouse with a symmetrical south-facing front facade. The ground floor features a central modern timber and glazed door, flanked by large PVC windows. The first floor has three PVC windows, with the two outer windows larger than the central one. All windows have simple surrounds. The west facade is blank. The rear elevation has a right-of-centre modern glazed door with large PVC windows to either side, and three unevenly spaced PVC windows of varying sizes at first-floor level. The exposed east gable end is blank. The facade is finished in rough cast and painted. The gabled roof is covered in Bangor blue slates and has two yellow brick chimney stacks. The house has been greatly altered in recent times: the original 'Ards' doorway has been removed, window openings have been altered (the front windows originally had segmental arch heads), and a large rear return has been demolished. The rubble facade with brick dressings has been rendered over.
No.4 is considerably smaller. Its west-facing front facade has a PVC door to the left with simple sandstone surround, and a PVC window to the right, with two smaller windows at first-floor level. The rear is dominated by a large flat-roofed extension with modern door and windows. The front facade is sandstone; the rear is finished in pebbledash. The gabled roof is covered in asbestos-free slates.
Nos.6 and 8 are largely identical. Each has a modern glazed door with sandstone surround to the left of the front facade and a PVC window to the right. No.6 has two stone steps leading to its door; No.8 has one. Both rear facades are now completely covered by large flat-roofed extensions. Both have gabled roofs covered in asbestos-free slates, with timber-constructed gabled dormers to the front. At the rear, both roofs are dominated by a large shared flat-roofed dormer. PVC rainwater goods are fitted throughout. No.6 has a rendered chimney stack to the west.
The terrace does not appear on the Ordnance Survey map of 1834 and is only partly shown on the 1858-60 map (No.2 may be absent from this map). According to the owner of No.2, that house was built in the 1860s by the Murdock family and served as a large farmhouse with several large outbuildings, one of which (to the west of the house) has since been converted to a dwelling. No.2 formerly possessed a large rear return which was demolished during recent comprehensive renovation of the property.
All properties have been greatly extended at the rear in recent times and all now sport modern doors and window frames. Most houses have been substantially modernised.
