Description

The site at 116 and 118 Church Road, Holywood, has been redeveloped with a modern apartment complex, following the demolition of the original buildings. The First Survey records described a two-storey block of two houses with an attic. The roofs were slated, with gable ends and brick chimneys featuring yellow dentils. The walls were constructed of brick at number 116, and grey render at number 118. A dentil eaves cornice and frieze, incorporating yellow and red brick, were present. A moulded base ran along the front. The ground floor featured five oriels, separated by doorways. Each oriel was single-storey, with pilaster jambs and mullions surmounted by an entablature and blocking course. First-floor windows at number 116 were double-height and without astrays; those at number 118 also had double-height windows, with horizontal astrays in one oriel, and a recent sash window in the right-hand oriel. The doorways were framed with pilaster jambs, an entablature with a console cornice, and a blocking course. The porch at number 116 contained a three-pane fanlight, centre margin panes, two-pane sidelights, and a flush panel door. The porch at number 118 housed a three-pane fanlight, panelled sidelights, a panelled apron, and a panelled door. Number 118 also had two recent square dormer windows. The overall frontage was approximately 80 feet and the buildings were suggested to date from the latter half of the 19th century. The condition was noted as fair during a visit on 17th July 1973. The buildings are not listed and do not possess architectural or historical interest.
