Description

Sunnyhill is a much extended one and a half and two storey farmhouse set on the east side of a narrow road to the north of Movilla Road, approximately one mile east of Newtownards, County Down.

The building probably began life in the early nineteenth century as a simple linear dwelling. A building shown on the Ordnance Survey maps of 1834 and 1858-60 appears to correspond to the inner half of the double gabled section on the north side, which likely dates from this period. The southern front section was added in the late nineteenth century, around the 1880s-90s, whilst the outer western half of the double gabled portion was possibly added in the mid twentieth century.

The south portion of the house is one and a half storey. The front south facade features a central timber panelled door with a segmental arch headed fanlight, encased with plain pilasters and fluted brackets supporting a cornice with a shallow blocking course above. To the left of the door is a segmental arch headed window opening with simple surround and PVC frame; an identical window sits to the right of the doorway. Directly above the door, set in a gabled half dormer, is a small semicircular headed window with surround and frame of similar character. The east gable of this main south section has two upper level segmental arch headed window openings with PVC frames, with a larger similar window to the right on the ground floor. The west gable is similarly arranged but with the ground floor window positioned to the left. To the left side of the rear of the south portion is a full height lean-to extension with a PVC window and timber sheeted door with small glass panel to its north facade, and a PVC window to the short east facade.

To the right hand side of the rear of the south section projects a very large two storey double gabled section on the north. This is considerably larger than the front south section. The east facade of this section has two PVC windows to the ground floor and one to the right on the first floor. The west facade has two similar windows to the ground floor and two to the first floor. The north gable, being the west of the double gables, contains a PVC window to the left on the first floor and a pair of French doors to the ground floor. The inner eastern half of the whole double gabled section is longer than the western portion and projects further to the north. The west facade of this projecting section has a PVC window to the ground floor and one to the left on the first floor. This section merges into a single storey gabled outbuilding.

The entire facade is finished in plain render and painted. All roofs are covered in Bangor blue slates, with the roof of the south section having a slight overhang. Two rendered chimney stacks sit to the gables of the front south section, and one to the inner eastern section of the double gabled portion. Rainwater goods are PVC.

According to valuation records of circa 1836, the house was in possession of Samuel Arnold, with both the building and accompanying land possessing a rateable value of £4-15-5.
