Corry burial vault, Movilla Cemetery, Old Movilla Road, Newtownards, Co Down, BT23 2HH

The Corry burial vault, constructed between 1860 and 1879, stands within Movilla Cemetery, near the ruins of Movilla Abbey in Newtownards. It is a family tomb built in the style of a miniature Greek Doric temple, prominently situated in the north of the cemetery. The structure is built from Scrabo sandstone and features decorative acroteria on its pediments and eaves. Carved wreaths with the date 1860 appear in the tympanum of each pediment, though the stonework on the north elevation is damaged. The vault’s ceiling and upper inner walls are carved to resemble headstones, commemorating various members of the Corry family. A 1708 headstone belonging to John Corry is propped against columns on the western side of the interior. The monument was erected in 1860 by Robert Corry of Belfast on the Corry family burial ground and remains in use as a mausoleum; the most recent interment, likely ashes, occurred in November 1990. The vault exhibits interest due to its architectural style, proportions, ornamentation, and plan form, as well as its local historical significance. Ownership is currently private.
