Description
The Movilla Cemetery Lodge is a small, picturesque two-storey gate lodge, originally dating from around 1876, situated on the eastern edge of Newtownards, County Down, at the eastern entrance to Movilla Cemetery. The front (north) elevation features a central, plain, sheeted timber door with a large, plain fanlight. The doorway has a simple surround with a moulded keystone decorated with a shield featuring an anchor. Narrow window openings flank the doorway, each with a segmental arch head and a sash window with vertical astragals. The west gable has a small upper-level sash window and a modern flat-roofed garage attached at ground floor level. The east gable mirrors the front elevation with an upper-level window (lacking astragals) and a more recent two-pane window on the ground floor. The lodge incorporates a full-height gabled return at the rear, displaying a large modern kitchen window on its east facade, and another gabled return to the right rear, featuring a small upper-level sash window. A single-storey, flat-roofed bathroom extension is attached to the rear of the main house and the west face of the return, featuring modern doors and windows on its south facade. A small sash window is visible on the ground floor of the west elevation of the return, and another small upper-level window is on the rear of the main house. The entire facade is finished with lined render. The main house's pitched roof is covered with Bangor blue slates, with an overhang to the front and gables, exhibiting exposed rafter ends to the front and decorative tied barges to the main gables. The roof extends slightly above the front doorway and is supported by timber brackets. Two rendered and corbelled chimney stacks rise from the main roof, with one on the gable of the return.
The lodge likely dates from around 1876, coinciding with the Newtownards Burial Board's acquisition of Movilla Cemetery. The gabled return appears to be from the early twentieth century, while the flat-roofed extension and garage are likely from the 1960s.
