Description

13-15 Warren Road, Donaghadee

A pair of small single-storey terrace houses with attics, possibly originally mid-19th century in date, but whose present appearance with half-dormers and label mouldings indicates major alteration around 1900. The houses are positioned on the east side of Warren Road, north of Donaghadee town centre.

Both properties present an asymmetrical west-facing front façade that are largely identical to one another. Each has a door positioned to the right, a window to the left, and a semicircular-headed window set within a gabled half-dormer to the upper left. The window frames and doors are modern. Label moulding runs above all ground floor openings and links with a string course; the half-dormer windows have a moulded surround. The entire front elevation is finished in painted lined render.

The rear elevations could only be observed from a distance. Number 13 has a large two-storey gabled return to the left at the rear, appearing to be of relatively recent construction. This return has a modern window to each floor on the irregular gable, and a modern window and door to the ground floor of the north face. The rear façade of the main section of the house, to the right of the return, has a ground floor window with modern frame and a smaller window to the upper level set in a gabled half-dormer. The entire rear elevation of number 13 is finished in unpainted render.

Number 15's rear elevation is similar, with a window to the right and another set in a half-dormer above. To the left is a single-storey return with a mono-pitched roof. Above the return, on the rear façade of the main house, is another window. The entire rear elevation is finished in painted render.

Both properties have gabled roofs slated with rendered chimney stacks to each. Both have a small Velux window to the front. The rainwater goods appear to be mainly PVC.

Buildings are shown on the Ordnance Survey town plan of Donaghadee from 1859, though it is difficult to determine with certainty whether they correspond exactly to the position of those visible today. The façades of the present two buildings have a late Victorian and Edwardian character, suggesting the properties may date from around 1890-1910, or underwent major renovation at this time. A neighbouring property, number 17 to the north, is similar to numbers 13 and 15 and was evidently built or renovated at the same period, though it now has a very large flat-roofed dormer to the front.
