Description

The Town Hall, located on the south side of The Square in Axbridge, was built in 1830 and serves as both a town hall and auction room. The building features a rendered exterior with end pilasters, a plain band at the first floor, a moulded cornice, and a parapet with plain coping that breaks forward at the center bay. This bay incorporates an open pediment that houses a clock within a circular surround, and the roof is hipped and covered with slate.

The Town Hall has a symmetrical frontage and is two storeys high, with a layout of three bays across. The first floor has tall sash windows with glazing bars, with the central window flanked by narrow sidelights. The ground floor features five-light transomed metal casements set in segmental-headed openings, although the left opening has been altered. Ornamental iron grill bars enhance the ground floor windows.

A broad central segmental-headed door opening leads to recessed double 4-panelled doors, which are concealed by an outer pair of decorative wrought iron gates. The entrance is accentuated by a portico supported by two circular cast-iron columns, topped with a flat entablature that bears the painted lettering "TOWN HALL." Iron railings on the roof of the portico create a balcony effect. Additionally, a small bell is mounted on a wrought iron support to the left of the parapet. The minutes of the Corporation include accounts related to the construction of the Town Hall.
