Description
Ashfield House is a Grade II listed building located on the southwest side of Mount Street, facing Vivary Park. It is believed to have been modernised in 1794, although it externally appears to date from the early to mid-19th century, with some alterations. The house has two storeys and is finished in whitewashed roughcast. It features a hipped slate roof with projecting eaves supported by brackets, and the middle section of the roof extends over a projecting two-storey verandah.
There is one dormer with double wood casements, and the first floor has a variety of windows, including two large sashes with glazing bars on the left and right. French windows lead to the trellised verandah at the first floor level. The ground floor is covered by an overall lean-to roof with slates. The street front showcases an attractive round-headed doorway with an architrave surround and a vermiculated keystone, complemented by a traceried fanlight and a six-panel door.
Ashfield House is part of a group of listed buildings that includes the School, Unitarian Chapel, the Lawn, Mary Street House, the listed buildings in Vivary Park, Wilton House in Hammets Walk, and Nos 1 to 14 (consecutive) Upper High Street.
