Description

Wessex Lodge is a house, now used as offices, built around 1860. It features red brick with stone dressings and a Welsh slate roof, designed in the Gothic style. The building is L-shaped with a stair turret at the angle. The main section has three storeys, a four-storey tower, and a single-storey entrance hall on the southwest side. The south entrance front includes a large porch on the left, which has a pyramid roof supported by paired columns with Ruskinian capitals. To the right, there is a three-storey gable with a two-storey canted bay that has five light mullion and transom windows. The gable features a two-light window with trefoil heads. The west front has three two-light windows with trefoil heads and stone mullions in the single-storey section. Above, there are two-light mullioned windows, with the upper ones set in half dormers. A stack with four octagonal stone shafts is present. The east elevation mirrors the gable on the south elevation. Between the two is the four-storey octagonal stair turret, which has decorative stone quoins and single-light windows at each level. The fourth floor features a belvedere with eight windows that have Caernarvon arched heads and a conical roof. The rear has a small extension but is otherwise unaltered. The villa remains almost unchanged on the exterior and showcases good design qualities.
