Description

Rathmore is a large house dating from the 1880s, constructed of brick with stone dressings and a red plain tiled roof. It exemplifies a simplified Jacobean style. The house has two storeys and an attic, with three principal rooms at the rear, a hall, and a projecting stair tower to the front. Originally, service rooms were located in a separate wing to the north. The entrance is located to the left, under a gabled porch with an ogee outer arch and leaded windows. The paired inner doors are set within a deeply moulded brick arch featuring Rococo carved panels. Behind the porch is a gabled bay containing a three-light mullioned window on the first floor. An octagonal stair turret, topped with a conical roof, rises to the right. A canted bay window with stone mullions illuminates the front hallway, with three-light mullioned windows above, lighting the upper landing. An advanced gable to the right features a doorway and four-light mullioned and transomed windows, likely originally linked to the service quarters. To the right of this gable are two hipped roofs covering a single-storey service and coach house range. The garden front is composed of three gabled bays. The outer gables have full-height canted bay windows with stone mullions and leaded lights. A half-timbered gable projects, supported by corbels. The central gable has paired three-light stone mullioned windows within a shallow, squared bay and a central buttress. Another half-timbered gable projects over a cove above. Axial and end wall stacks feature clustered polygonal shafts. Inside, much of the original detailing remains, including Jacobean-style wood panelling in the hall and staircase, and 18th-century style plasterwork and wall panelling in the principal rooms.
